Friday Night Bow League

My best friend, Holly, aka Cupcake #2 and I bow hunt together every Fall……….this year she decided that we should keep practicing during the winter and join the winter bow league.

So now Friday nights we head off to the bow shop.

It’s a 3-D shoot, which means instead of shooting at a paper target on a wall of foam you are shooting at foam animal targets…..should

be no problem…..right??

The targets include all of the usual suspects……elk, white tail deer,  mule deer, antelope, bear……but also include a baboon, frog, and a mosquito…..really?  I have

never hear of anyone hunting mosquitoes.

Bow hunting, like fly fishing, requires lots of accessories.

Pretty close……that’s a piece of tape she was shooting at.

This is her very nice bull from a few years ago.

So back to shooting in the bow league…….our team is the Virgo Cupcakes….and it started out the first night with just the two of us.

Remember the part above where I said it should be “no problem”?……….well I didn’t practice at all before we started and the first night out

I managed to destroy 4 or 5 arrows……….they don’t work so well after they’ve hit the concrete floor or go into the wood fence 🙁  Well

no big deal, at the end of the night I just march upstairs and tell one of the guys working there that I needed to buy some more arrows……he

said “how many?”  I said how about two dozen…….he said that will be $200………..I said maybe just a  dozen and I will get here to practice.

Now I understand why they do winter bow league……….it’s good for business 🙂

So now I am practicing several times a week, or I may have to get a second job to support my arrow habit…..this league goes

on for a few months!!

Now after the first Friday I was at the shop practicing and Gabe, one of the owners, comes down and said I have someone I

want to add to your team…..I said great.

Meet Cameron, he’s 15 and a fine young man……….now know as Baby Cake…..in order to be on the Virgo Cupcake team you have to have the appropriate name.

Now I have to say I’m not sure Gabe  knew what he was getting poor Baby Cake  into……with two forty something chicks….or maybe he

did??

We adopted him immediately and put him straight to work pulling arrows out of our targets and estimating distances to the targets for us.

He also happens to shoot in other leagues…..which  means he’s a good shot……a bonus since he can help get our scores up.

He has a bow specific for league shooting………in other words he doesn’t take it traipsing out in the woods.

Cupcakes bow, my bow, and Baby Cakes’ bow.

We love Cameron………..he’s a lot of fun and a good sport to put up our shenanigans.  We are three weeks into the league

and it really is fun…… I have not had a repeat of the first night……..so far!!!

I had to include my bull that I harvested in 2011………not with my bow though.
